Three is the trinity, the result of one and two combining; as a result they represent a new phase with the previous experiences being stripped away and new experiences about to be enjoyed. The essence is of creativity, expansion, enthusiasm, expression, communication, pleasure and happiness.

It is the number of growth, energy, resolution and expansion, optimism, and intellectual development. It is associated with the colour yellow, which also governs the intellect as well as optimism, self-expression and clarity.

Three is heavy with symbolism across cultures and time, relating to the holy trinity, father, son and holy spirit, Isis, Osiris and Horus in Egyptian mythology, the three faces of the Wiccan Goddess, maiden, mother & crone, holistic mind, body and spirit.

In numerology, three is the expressive number, with creativity at its core.

A three personality is one which is highly creative, and finds they are able to express themselves with ease through artistic endeavours. They are enthusiastic and live life with joy and happiness as the most important thing to them, they are extrovert, outgoing and generally the centre of attention.

In the minor arcana, threes make us aware of a new phase that we are entering into, which should be welcomed with enthusiasm and joy. Threes are celebratory and expansive, however a sense of fear, despondency or even disappointment can be associated with this number. Intelligence is important and can become overly analytical as well as mentally astute. Three can also be the unwanted companion to two, when we are in a relationship, sometimes an additional person is not really welcome, and in this respect three can be the overly keen guest, elbowing into the balance of two.

In the major arcana, three is the number of The Empress, reduced it is also related to The Hanged Man (12) and The World (21) all three have elements of three in common but also contain their own leading qualities.

Three homes are where expansion and positivity reign, enthusiasm, socialising and diversity flourish in a three home.

The three essence can however be challenging as energies can expand too quickly, enjoyment can also cost more than realistically be paid for, both financially and physically, and with all that optimism, disappointment can hit hard as is unexpected and often unprepared for.
