Ritual is generally seen to be part of the more formal school of spells casting and magical tradition. However it doesn't hurt to acknowledge its place and the benefits to casting a spell.

Ritual is defined as a ceremonial act and performance of that act, and therefore indicates that when using ritual you are in fact performing something imbued with meaning. It is for this reason that ritual is beneficial in spellcasting, as indeed anything that focuses your intent will enhance the spell.

Also certain rituals are performed to help protect you whilst casting a spell.

The most common ritual is the act of casting a circle at the beginning of the spell process and then closing it down at the end. It is easy to cast a circle and it creates a space around you that is both safe and powerful and focuses your intent.

There are several methods of casting a circle, but the most important aspects are that the circle is cast going from north, east, south and then west, acknowledging the elements associated with each direction and the goddess at each point.

Whether you use actual physical representations to mark your circle, place a symbol for each element at each point around you, or simply stand still and imagine the circle in white light around you, the act of thinking or saying out loud an acknowledgement of the goddesses and elements at each point will be powerful enough.

If you do not have a compass and cannot establish which direction is north, then simplify it further and cast a clockwise circle around yourself.

Closing the circle at the end of the spell is as simple as reversing the process, so going from west to south to east to north and thanking the goddesses and their elements for their protection, or simply removing it by walking anticlockwise around the perimeter.

I have already mentioned elements a few times in this section and others in connection with spell casting, and of course elements has a section all of its own. Earth, Air, Fire and Water have been called down for centuries in spellcasting and magic, as by representing them in your space, and calling upon them when casting the circle you are drawing on their power and creating a fifth, spritual space from their combined powers.

If you want to draw on their power beyond the casting of the circle and representation in ingredients, you can set up tools to represent each element placed in its relevant point on the compass.

For Earth use stones, crystals or earth
For Air use incense or resin or burn dried herbs
For Fire use a candle
For Water use a crystal bowl filled with water

Lastly always ensure your space is safe, so that any candles or burning of herbs and incense will not cause any damage or an accident.
