Colour is an integral part of our inner journey, not only does it have meaning in its symbolism, but colour is essential to creating the perfect space.

Often we choose a colour for a room because we like it, without thinking about the impact it may have on our wellbeing.

For instance yellow in a bedroom might seem to be perfect, nice and bright and sunny! But the bedroom is where we sleep and relax, and of course the place for a little romance. Imagine trying to fall asleep in a yellow bedroom, your mind will be racing, it will be difficult to drop off, you might even have to resort to sleeping tablets to get a good nights sleep! Having said that you'll probably wake up full of energy and vigour!

If you feel out of sorts and cannot work out why, take a look around your home, look at the colours you have chosen and think about whether these are adversely affecting your peace of mind, use this guide and the innermoo colour section to help:

Bedroom – choose calming colours for the bedroom, colours like blue, purple/lilac, indigo or green. Keep the colours on the soothing side of the spectrum though, try not to use primary or bright colours as these will heighten energies instead of calming them.

Living room – often people choose plain palettes for their living room, this is the place we spend most of our time, so choose a colour that makes you feel happy and relaxed, or try a combination of colours for impact. Colours such as deep red, green and purple are good, using these colours as feature colours in amongst a muted surrounding of white or cream.

Bathroom – you can let your imagination go wild in the bathroom. For a spa like approach try cleansing and calming blue, for some passion go red, or for a back to nature feel then green is the colour for you.

Dining room – the social hub of the house, the best colours for here are orange (yes orange) or red. Most people prefer red for some reason!

Study/Office – yellow is the ideal colour in here, as this colour invigorates the mind, communication skills and is great to aid learning. (another reason why its not good for the bedroom!)

Kitchen – for this room you have the entire palette of colours at your disposal, but ideally try blue, yellow, or orange (eg terracotta) for an effective kitchen space.

Hallway – orange is great in this area as it speeds up energy and encourages people to come into the house, welcoming with warmth and happiness! Yellow is effective here too as it brings sunshine and joy with it.

Games/Playrooms – its those bright happy colours again here, orange and yellow to encourage imagination and fun.

Of course the position of the room in the house can also impact on the colour to use in order to improve the energies in the room, look at feng shui for more information on this.

There are lots of ways to use colour in the home, these are just guidelines in connection with the properties of each colour, there are additional considerations with colour and feng shui, and of course with your own personal taste. For more information on colour, its healing uses and the properties of each colour see moo colour.
