What is colour?

Colour is light and travels to our eyes using the same types of wavelength as radio and sound, but is the only wavelength we can actually see

How do we see it?

When light strikes any coloured object, the object absorbs only the wavelength of the colour that exactly matches its own structure, and reflects the rest – we then see the colour not being reflected, as white light is constructed of seven colours.

All kinds of factors affect how the colour is perceived however including the surface of the object, the rougher it is the duller the colour will seem and the smoother it is the brighter the colour will seem.

Why is colour divided into warm and cool colours?

This is also related to the wavelengths of the colours. Red, orange and yellow all have longer wavelengths (red is the longest) and therefore appear to be closer to us than it is and therefore seem warm and enclosing. Blue, indigo and violet however have shorter wavelengths (violet being the shortest) and so seem further away than they actually are, making them seem cool.

Violet is an interesting colour however, as it is made up of red and blue, and therefore depending on the balance of each component colour can seem both warm or cool.

How does colour affect us?

Colour is an energy borne from the energy of light, whose original emanation is from the greatest source of energy of them all, the sun. It is therefore possible for the vibrational energy patterns of different colours to interact with and affect our own unique energy pattern. This is how it can affect us.

I really hate a certain colour, why is that?

You may dislike a certain colour for a number of psychological reasons, including things like associations from childhood relating to the colour itself for some reason.

Often however, a dislike of a certain colour can indicate a blockage of energy relating to the qualities that colour possesses. For instance, if you have a dislike of the colour yellow, you may have a blockage when it comes to studying, concentration and learning. Perhaps you feel unable to learn, or hated school and vowed never to go back to a similar institution again! Now as an adult you hate the colour yellow, and would love to change jobs but need to gain more qualifications and feel unable to. By facing your fears, embracing the colour and acknowledging the blockage you could be well on your way to changing things, and liking yellow a bit more. This is one example, and each colour has a multitude of meanings. Yellow also relates to the emotions, communication and luck.
