Colour is light, and is the only part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we can see. Newton discovered that light travels in waves and when shone through a prism refracts into the colours of the rainbow.

When we see colour, light is reaching our eyes at different wavelengths, which is how we distinguish between the different colours. The longest wavelength (vibrating at the lowest frequency) is red, the shortest wavelength (vibrating at the highest frequency) is violet, all the other colours are in between these two. Once light hits an object the wavelength that matches its colour is the only one absorbed and this is how we see the colour.

Research and experiments have shown the direct correlation between colour and energy, showing that it has a profound physical and psychological affect on our own energies.

In Russia and experiment with blind people proved that just through touch they were able to differentiate between colours, identifying reds as warm and tingling and blues as cool and smooth. Thus colour has an energy field that directly reacts with and effects our own energies fields at a deep level.

Taking this further, it has been proven that colour can affect hormones and enzymes, causing them to undergo molecular changes or affecting the rates of reactions depending on the colour they are exposed to.

On a psychological level, colour can affect our moods and emotions and our preference for a specific colour can indicate how we are feeling. Dr Max Luscher , a colour scientist, undertook several experiments and concluded that our reactions to colour are deeply imbedded in our unique personal psyches, transcending any cultural boundaries.

Without realising it we constantly acknowledge the power of colour in our lives, by having a favourite colour for instance or in our language with sayings such as “feeling blue”, “green with envy”, “rose-tinted glasses”, “red with anger”, all of these are examples from a long list of expressions with deep rooted connections to our relationship with colour.

Colour therefore can affect our emotions and psychological well-being as well as reveal our inner uniqueness, and in a number of ways. How we decorate our homes, the clothes we wear, the colour we prefer, our favourite flower etc all have a profound affect on us and allow us to understand ourselves better. Don't you feel better when you have a bath in your newly decorated and soothing blue bathroom? How do you feel when you have to wear a grey uniform? And what about when your partner buys you red roses?

Colour can now be integrated into healing practices and is a common therapy for aiding imbalances and mental disorders. innermoo is a big fan of colour and hopefully through this section you will gain a little more insight into why you like some colours more than others, and what to do about any blockages or obstacles you have when you connect that to your like/dislike of a certain colour.
